back up multi camera production.

The first thing that I had to think about if I wanted to produce my project individually or in a small group.  The outcome was working with two other members (Jamie and Owen). The next task for the day was to brainstorm our ideas of what our project could be. After coming up with these ideas we eventually narrowed it down to filming the football lads playing cross bar challenge which would consist of two teams of players trying to hit the crossbar from a certain distance the side who hit the bar the most would win. So we went to James Hartley who is the sports maker for Middleborough College. The first constraint in our production was finding out that the colleges football pitch was not available to use for health and safety reasons, however we overcome this constraint by asking if there were any upcoming sports events such as basketball, volleyball or cricket. James had told us that he could email us details of the events happening so that we could get a hold of the equipment for the date.

These were the original ideas that we came up with to base our multi camera production. The idea that we chose was to film the college football team doing the’’cross bar challenge’’.

Chat show
Game interview
Filming the college football doing the cross bar challenge
A fight
Filming a live music video production
Someone with a drug addiction
Skateboarding line
Basketball filming
Filming a live performance show or the actors rehearsing.

The next thing to was start producing the pre production documents such as: risk assessments, call sheets, equipment booking forms ect.

21/11/17 we have completed the pre production documents including risk assessments, call sheets and booking forms. Completing the documents that fit for out production was fairly easy and is a must when it comes to video production. We are all set to film the volleyball match on the 27th of November.

27/11/17- the day of the production didn’t go as planned, members of the group had not turned up for the production so we decided to postpone the production for another week. This was the biggest constraint of the production so far, thanks to Jamie.

4/11/17-  We carried out production recording the volleyball team players in practice in the sports hall. The production went through pretty well because everything went through as planned. The biggest constraint of the production was the volley balls which were nearly hitting the equipment this was overcome by blocking the balls from enouncing the equipment. On the day of production Jamie one of the members in our group didn’t turn up to the production set so we asked another member of the course who wasn’t in our group if she would film for us because we couldn’t film it all between the two of us original members. Without her the production wouldn’t of happened. We used 4 cameras consisting of 2 DSLR’S, 1 black magic and 1 GoPro camera, meaning that we have got plenty of footage to edit in post production.  All three of us had a camera each to operate however Owen had two cameras to operate. We decided not to record audio and instead we will have a tune or some sort of sound in the background over the production footage. I think our production is a good example of a multi-camera production as it uses different range of cameras set up in different places.

The location visit was a bit tricky and weird at the start, the volley ball players and coach weren’t told that we were coming in to shoot, which was a constraint however we discussed and overcame the constraint to carry out the production as planned. The practice went on as expected we filmed about 30 minutes of the training which was enough for us to use for our multi-camera production. A lot of credit for todays location visit goes to Katie for filling in for the other crew member who didn’t show up.

Floor plan

Floor plans are a good thing to produce before you shoot as you can plan where your cameras and other pieces of equipment are going to be placed for the production which means on the day you can place the equipment in their spots without thinking about it. Our location was an indoor rectangular sports hall with a net in the middle. Unfortunately due to the circumstances of the players being in the way and the net being to high we weren’t able to place the cameras were we wanted them to be placed.

Text Box: Another DSLR will be placed here.Text Box: Another black magic will be placed in the corner of the room to try and capture a big area of the production Text Box: A DSLR camera will be placed at the side of the match this will be the most important camera in the production as it will be recording the most content from the production.Text Box: Go pro on the netWe are filming volleyball in the Middleborough college sport hall the area is a rectangular. There is a lot of things going in a volleyball which means that we had to use a lot of equipment for the multi-camera production. This is what our
floor plan will look like…

Text Box: The black magic camera will be placed at the front of the hall capturing the production.

The next step to complete is the post production stage, unfortunately the video will not be finalized until the new year when we go back to college. After the video footage is edited we will evaluate how the full production went as a group.  A write up for what we did in the edit and how we did it will also be done.

Equipment booking form

The equipment booking form was needed to book out the equipment that we needed to produce our multi camera production.  Audio is very important for our production so microphones would be needed and the chosen ones were one zoom mic and one shotgun mic which will record the volley ball teams movement/ voices and the ball bouncing off the players hands and the floor, we will also need tripods  to be booked out to keep the cameras still and in place as well as two DSLR cameras to get the footage of the volleyball training.

This booking equipment form was for the football match that we filmed, however we made the mistake of not booking out enough equipment so when we filmed the volleyball we made sure we hade more than what we needed. Which consisted of 2 DSLR’s 1 go pro 2 black magic cameras, 4 tripods and one zoom microphone.

Constraints in the production

The was a small amount constraint for the group when we produced our pre production documents each member for the group worked on different documents of pre production which were all completed to a satisfactory standard.  Members of the group made more than one document for example two risk assessments and three call sheets were made. The biggest constraint of the pre production stage would be carrying out different documents for two different projects. Our first idea was to film a volleyball game which we had made documents for and one of our crew members never turned up on the day so we decided to film a football match a couple of days after for this we needed to carry out a different risk assessment, floor plan and call sheet. As well as another booking equipment form. After filming the match, we decided that the footage we captured wasn’t up to a satisfactory standard so we decided to film the volleyball match again luckily we didn’t have to make more pre production documents because we already had them. However, another booking form had to be produced meaning we had made three different forms for our production which became pretty tedious.

The main constraints started to occur in our group when we were in the production stage of getting the footage. The day that we were originally supposed to shoot our multi-camera production was put off because not everyone in the group turned up to the shoot.  This really set us back because we had little time to complete the assignment, the astro turf got sorted out and passed its health and safety test so we ended up organizing to produce a football game at Middleborough College where the Middleborough College played Gatestead College. The game was arranged on the following Wednesday which gave us little time for planning and producing the pre production documents for the production, however we completed the documents and went through to produce our project based on the football game. On the day of shooting it was raining on and off so we only managed to get a small amount of footage which wasn’t enough to use for our multi camera production. The pre production documents we made for the football match were useless but could still be used for our write up. We have now booked out equipment to go through with our original plan to film a volleyball match which wont be affected by weather. We will be filming the game on the 4th of December.  The only benefit of having producing so many pre production documents is that we have more to write about when we are evaluating our production. To make sure I don’t have such constraints again I will make sure that the person in our group who let us down will never be in a group with me again.

Constraints of filming the volley ball practice were pretty minimal however the black magic camera which we used didn’t have a big enough lens to fit all of the court in, luckily we had 2 DSLR’s on set which had wide angled lenses which filmed the entire court.

Unfortunately, I had planned jaw surgery on the 7th of December meaning that Owen and Jamie would have to carry out the post production for the remaining two weeks of college this was probably the biggest constraint throughout the project however it was planned so we made sure that the hardest and most time consuming part of the project was carried out before the 7th of December, this meant that all that was left to do was to edit and evaluate.  Another major constraint that Jamie and Owen had was that the editing computers were not working so it was not possible for the footage to be edited on the week they were supposed to edit which was the week commencing the 11/12/17. The constraint was over come by Andy changing the deadline to a further date because of the computers not working to make matters worse the college broke up on the 19th of December meaning that the edit wont be finalized until the new year.
