Week 1
Each induvial who was specifically good at something for example editing was put into a group with other peers who were specifically good at the other things for example filming, directing, sound recording or producing. Straight away we agreed to produce something on the topic ‘Whatever Happened to Quality Television?’ To prepare for the following week each individual from the group needed to carry out research suitable for our production, we wanted to find out what programs are popular now and what was popular in the past and more specifically how the content of television has changed.

  • Interview footage with Ben’s nana and Ben with b-roll intervals.
  • Then the audio interview with Juliana from the Nigerian news channel with stock images on when she talks about reality TV.
  • Then a clip about what Ben’s nana says about reality TV
  • How many hours Ben’s nan spends watching TV.

Week 4
This is really where our production was starting to come together, scripts were made and locations were decided. The next step to do was to set out a shooting script for the interview with Ben’s nana. The shooting script help us achieve the look we wanted, for example the interview with Ben’s nan was set in the comfort of her own home which gives an aesthetic feeling that the viewer is getting a good understanding of what she does in her daily life and what she looks like doing it. We placed Ben and his nana in two home chairs sat opposite each other to make the interview look homey as the grandson and grandma chat.

‘Whatever happened to Quality Television?’

By

Ben Switzer.

TITLES: Whatever Happened to Quality Television?

EXT: Ben sat in the garden in an interview format speaking directly to the camera.

BEN

Too often in recent years we face the common problem that there is just nothing to watch and we are left frequently wondering what it is channel broadcasters actually do. In this documentary I have chosen to investigate the question what ever happened to the quality of television. I will be interviewing two different generations from two different backgrounds to better understand how television quality has changed over the years and the impact on demand services and technology has influenced the older generation.

INT: Loretta’s living room. Ben and Loretta are sat in the same shot.

LORETTA

In 1953, my next door neighbour was my cousin and her husband made the first television that I ever saw he made it himself, and all the children on the street piled in the front room and watched it on the television and it didn’t seem much, it was black and white and was as big as that.

A CLIP OF THE QUEENS CORONATION WILL BE PLAYED OVER THE VOICEOVER.

LORETTA

And then we had street party, and all dressed up in fancy dress

BEN

What did you go as?

LORETTA

A Lavender girl, and after that we had a park and we all went down the park and had races and finished up in the evening with music and dancing.

IMAGE OF A FLOWER GIRL IS SHOWN.

BEN

What do you like watching on TV?

LORETTA

Coronation street, Emmerdale and that’s it.

BEN

No EastEnders? Why don’t you like EastEnders?

LORETTA

Rough.

BEN

What would you consider quality tv like what gives you enjoyment when you watch it?

LORETTA

Sport more than anything.

BEN
Do you think any dramas on BBC or anything like that, are typically quality of television?

LORETTA

Not very much, no now and then, something a bit special

PICTURE OF LORETTA INFRONT OF THE TELEVISION IS SHOWN.

BEN

(Voiceover) The second part of the interview was recorded by Loretta due to covid-19.

EXT: LORETTA’S GARDEN IN AN INTERVIEW FORMAT.

BEN

What effect does the BBC not offering free TV licenses have on the older generation?

LORETTA

I think it would be quite a big effect because a lot of people just living on their pension. If I weren’t living with my daughter, then I wouldn’t be able to afford it and would miss it greatly. If any sport comes on are in the evenings when we settle down.

BEN

Do you think the quality of TV is declining as they worry more about money than the programme itself?

LORETTA

Yes, I definitely do, there’s too many repeats all the time and even when there is new lines, storylines, there’s nothing to learn from it because it’s the same thing over and over again.

BEN

Do you think reality TV has changed the quality of television broadcasting?

LORETTA

Yes definitely, mostly from the youngsters, i’m more interested in documentaries and lots of sport and my soaps and I don’t think it does young people any good because it’s just rubbish

BEN

Has on demand made it easier for you to watch television?

LORETTA

Yes I like on demand services as I can watch what I want when I want it and as for technology. I stream tennis from my laptop to my television and I don’t like the idea that the older generation can’t use technology if I can so can anyone else.

IMAGE OF JULIANNA .

BEN

(Voiceover) I later interviewed Juliana Olayinka, a news presenter for channels TV

JULIANNA

Okay so I work for a channel called channels TV, Channel TV is Nigeria’s number one news channel. Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa theres over 200 million Nigerians and in the UK we have a massive diaspora so there are approximately over 1 million Nigerians living in the UK

BEN

what do you deem to be a celebrity?

JULIANNA

I think a celebrity is someone who is popular, popular with mass media, popular on social media not necessarily talented but famous, famous for it could be a thousand reasons whether it’s for going on Love Island or being a footballer or being somebody who said something and it’s gone viral but somebody who is well-known.

BEN

You mentioned Love Island, so obviously it is a reality television show or supposed to be, could be scripted, but do you think reality television has a positive effect on our society?

JULIANNA

Does reality TV have a positive effect on society, no it doesn’t, it’s good, it’s a pastime, I think now that news is more instant I think people like reality Tv people want to watch something and can relate to it and can talk about it and perhaps can alter it themselves whether it’s voting people off so I definitely think there is a place for it and people want it. Is it positive? No, i’ve watched love island the last series and you know, producers put people in some positions that I think can be quite dangerous. You’re in a relationship and then they’re telling you this is what the headlines are saying causing so much trouble. Of course, you know with Caroline Flack, and mike and the other lady who they all three have sadly committed suicide. Is it down to reality TV, no but that’s their platform and the fact that there’s been three in a number of years is worrying.

BEN

What do you think has happened to the quality of television over the years? So how it may have diminished over time?

JULIANNA

I think there’s good quality TV out there, I just think there’s just too much choice, I think that’s one of the main issues, I think you know if you look hard enough you can find good quality TV but unfortunately it’s just oversaturated. I’ve got Netflix, i’ve got Sky, all the channels and most nights i’m like I can’t find anything to watch they’re either too similar or they’re too niche. I do think there’s choice and I think sometimes if you when you overload people with information you don’t know what’s rubbish and what’s not and I think that’s the issue. I think before you know on a Saturday night, i’m 33, on a Saturday night, Channels 1 to 5 you know your watching blind date, you bet, you just knew what you were watching, there’s one telly in the house and you kind of look forward to it or EastEnders now there are so many different options

BEN

Different platforms.

JULIANNA

Different platforms, different options and more rubbish.

BEN

Do you think television is made easier for the older generation to adapt and use technology?

JULIANNA

No not really not television, mainly the internet, I did a report the other day, or I covered a story the other day and they said that one of the fastest growing tools for study is free online tools and those free online tools mainly come from YouTube or Wiki, if your like how do I do this, you type it in and it comes up I don’t think TV is doing that, well not traditional TV anyways. I think the readily information available on YouTube and the internet.

BEN

How about on-demand services? Do you think those are helping older generation or do you think they even use them at all?

JULIANNA

No, I don’t think they are helping at all, I don’t think they are helping. I have three young children and when I give them my phone the things that they are doing, I’m like oh my goodness how is you doing that. No, I don’t think it’s helping, there’s definitely a generation gap ad each new technology it’s for that generation.

EXT: BEN SAT IN THE GARDEN TALKING IN AN INTERVIEW FORMAT.

BEN

To conclude, during our investigation into the quality of television we have witnessed similar interpretations. Both Loretta and Juliana agreed that the quality of television is deteriorating, and Loretta thought that live sport was the last available source of quality television.  Furthermore, they both expressed their despise of reality television shows. However, Juliana argued that there is in fact a market for the programme as it gives an insight into other people’s lives.  They did not agree on all our interview questions. Juliana insisted that the older generation were unable to use any form of technology. whereas it is apparent that Loretta constantly used on demand services and suffers from a stereotype that the older generation cannot use technology.

WEEK 5
B-roll footage was filmed, which gave us something to edit for the following week, everyone came on the day to film TV’s in a store and videos of busy places such as Southbank, here are a couple of shots. We got the shot of the new TV to show contrast between old and new technologies. We chose Southbank because the BFI film institute is located there.

Week 6
We now had our own b-roll footage to edit in our workshop class. The workshop was very helpful as it taught us new editing techniques we didn’t know and example of these techniques will be seen in our final documentary.

WEEK 7
During this week we carried on practising our editing skills and recorded the interview with Juliana from the Nigerian news show. The interview was very good and as a group we learnt a lot and it was useful for out documentary.

WEEK 8
More editing was conducted, and b-roll footage was harvested during this week. This is an thumbnail of some stock footage we got of the queens coronation, this was suitable for us because the interview with Ben’s nan discusses the queens coronation as it was probably the most televised thing back then.

Week 10
We have most of our footage and audio needed for our documentary, but we still need more b-roll footage for our production. However due to Covid-19 the group is divided, and everyone is working from home, one person finishing the edit and the others are working on their production. Sessions on teams are being conducted on a weekly basis to make sure everyone is on track.

Week 11
During this week, our video editor was not responding to us nor was he editing. me being the producer had to take matters into my own hands. I wasn't supposed to be the main editor but I used knowledge from the MS5101 workshops and YouTube to edit what we had, upon editing I found that there was a second argument to be addressed which regarded the older generation using new technologies, I noticed how Bens nan could use new technologies and Juliana from Channels TV said the new technologies don't help the older generation when in some cases it does. Due to Covid-19 the interview had to be recorded separately by Ben and his nan.
When I was editing I was met with constraints, when it came to exporting some clips were missing audio, I was trying everything from 10am until 10pm to fix the situation and time was running out, we solved the issue by putting the clips that kept loosing audio onto youtube and then I converted them into a usable file and then placed the clips into my premiere pro project, and it worked. I was very relieved because I thought that this would have caused us to miss the deadline day.

Here is an image of me working from home.
